Electrocardiograms (EKG) are used to get a superficial picture of the hearts electrical rhythm. Physicians use EKG for detecting heart electrical signals and any abnormalities there in. EKGs are easily obtained by attaching leads on the chest, arms and ankles. It takes roughly five minutes for the entire process, the results are printed on a graphed sheet of paper and sent to a certified-cardiologist who interpret the results. This is radiation and pain free.

Ankle Brachial Index also known as ABI are used for detecting arterial pathology that may cause pain with walking, or arterial ulcers as a results of lack of blood flow to the legs. It is much like getting your blood pressure taken at your doctor’s office except both arms and leg blood pressures and taken. This is radiation and pain free. If there are any abnormalities seen on the EKG/ABI, HealthCare Imaging notifies your physician immediately for pertinent actions needed.

Why is it used?

EKGs can be used to diagnose heart blocks, enlargement of parts of the heart, rhythms that can cause sudden death and most importantly heart attacks. It is easy to obtain, fast and a reliable tool to rule out any lethal heart diseases urgently. They are also used as a general requirements for pre-operative clearance must a patient require surgery.

ABIs can be used to diagnose vascular insufficiency. Once blood pressures are taken on both arms and legs, ratios are taken and interpreted by radiologist. The results indicate whether you need further imaging and a referral to a vascular surgeon for correction of disease pathology or the leg pain and ulcers are because of a different reason and not arterial in nature.
